In an ideal world, all music would be both entertaining and educational. But it’s not an ideal world, you may have noticed.

Swiss Art historian Raffael Dörig first came to our attention as the creator / curator of the influential Dispokino blog, a long running project that detailed examples of high minded mid-century ambition in terms of progressive living, learning and human flourishing through a series of photographs, objects and design. It was a blog that did more than just point at things, instead conjuring a cohesive, viable alternate universe where interpretive dance, DIY masks and brutalist architecture were mainstream pursuits, and bird song records topped the pop charts. It was a wonderful place, a dimension where ambitious but altruistic visionaries were calling the shots, and humankind was joyfully reaping the benefits.

With Knistern (the word for ‘crackle’ in German), Raffael has (via a thirty year musical practice that he reconnected to during the Covid-19 pandemic) provided another gateway to that fantastic but sadly unrealised world. We enter via thirty minutes of compositions, experiments and improvisations utilising old and new synthesisers, toys, tape loops and other uncanny means to thrilling effect.As you might expect from such an endeavour, some of the music is created with the involvement of his young children.

It is an album that is humbly and modestly presented, but has complexity and beauty. It evokes the past without ever seeming like pastiche, but is also largely a forward facing document, one that looks to a future where, once again, connection, contentment and intellectual stimulation really matter, a place where it is perfectly acceptable for children (and adults) to listen to music and pretend to be trees or plastic bags or wild animals.

Like many academics, Raffael underrates himself as an artist: we politely but strongly disagree. Utopia is still out there somewhere, we just need different maps—and the right kind of guide.
