In the 21st century, it's almost impossible to be wholly and solely original in terms of art. What is possible, however, is to be absolutely and unrelentingly yourself - to make art that only you could do.

For twenty years - as The Sunflower Band - Marcus Oakley has ploughed a very specific and overwhelmingly personal furrow. There are elements of Syd Barrett at his most gently unhinged, bits of folk, pop, electronica. There are tracks about furniture, or not wearing socks. Sometimes the music is happy, sometimes sad, sometimes enigmatic. But is always wholly and solely Marcus Oakley, and that's its greatest strength.

Far too accomplished to be amateurish, but with the joyful feel and sound of the spontaneously created, the 18 tracks on Greatest Hits may have never troubled the Top 40, but since when has that been a definitive yardstick of artistic achievement?

We'll be back in 2043 to see how he's getting on.
